How to read your panel plan

What is in the export

The PDF has six sections, in export order:

  • Cover — dwelling, supply, earthing system, rule profile, enclosure, groups, disclaimer.
  • Single-line diagram — the structure of the panel as an indented text tree.
  • Panel view — the enclosure, its rails and every module, numbered, with a legend.
  • Bill of materials — devices, busbars, combs, cables, panel wire, enclosure.
  • Step-by-step assembly — steps generated from your panel, not generic advice.
  • Group labels — a print-and-cut label sheet.

Reading the single-line diagram

The diagram is text, not a picture, and reads top to bottom like a folder tree: an item drawn with |- has more below it, the corner marker draws the last. The first line is the supply and the earthing system; under it comes the incomer chain in the order current flows — main breaker, main RCD, voltage relay or SPD if present, then the distribution block and the incoming N busbar.

Each RCD section is then a block, headed SECTION "Sockets". Circuits under a section head share that RCD: a leak on one switches off all of them (RCD vs RCBO). The closing line, N -> N busbar "Sockets", is the reminder that every neutral of the section returns to its own busbar (panel wiring). A circuit with a built-in RCD sits in no section: those are listed at the bottom.

Each row shows marking, circuit name and cable: 3x2.5 is a three-core 2.5 mm² cable (cable sizing). On three phases the phase follows the name (phase balancing).

What a device label means

A label like Kitchen sockets B16 30 mA is the circuit name plus a technical code:

  • B is the trip curve, 16 the rated current in amperes (MCB ratings and curves).
  • 30 mA means the device covers leakage itself (why 30 mA); without it, that comes from the section RCD above.
  • AFDD before the curve letter means arc fault detection is built in (AFDD).
  • S on an incoming RCD means selective: it waits for the group RCD to clear the fault first (selective RCDs).

Rails, slots and the numbered steps

The panel view draws the rails top to bottom. Each device takes one or more module positions, counted from 1 at the left of its rail, and carries a number the legend maps to a full label.

The assembly steps use the same coordinates, grouped under unnumbered headings: Rail 1 — mount the devices, then Rail 1 — wiring, then rail 2, with the numbers running on across them. A rail is wired before the next is populated: wires running downwards hide behind the next DIN rail, and are easier to lay while it is empty. The last steps are always labelling and the final checks: re-tighten, press every TEST button, then have the panel verified (when to call an electrician).
